Posted: November 6, 2011 in health

Dealing with battle of the bulge may range from adhering to a sensible meal plan to careless efforts and extreme risky behaviours. There are practices that are will not cause health hazards because they aren’t sustained for long but there are also dieting strategies that are risky and may cause serious medical conditions.

There are individuals who are so obsessed with weight loss that they often resort to unproven and dangerous methods which can backfire with serious medical problems in the future. Extreme dieting may also increase the risk for the development of eating disorders. Eliminating certain food groups, skipping meals and taking supplements are not highly recommended by health experts. On the other hand, these practices will more likely lead to medical issues. Here are the top 6 most dangerous strategies that you should avoid from my weight loss blog.

Fasting, starvation and low calorie meals

Slashing calories in the diet leads to weight reduction but this weight loss also includes muscle mass which is detrimental to your health. Rapid weight reduction using calorie restriction results to fat, water and muscle loss that decreases metabolism. It also creates a change toward a higher fat percentage of fat, and increases your risk for diabetes and metabolic syndromes. Do not go under 1,200 calories daily or you will struggle to provide nutrient needs, satisfy hunger and fuel activity.

Dubious weight loss and diet pills

Potions, diet pills and concoctions that are bought over the counter or purchased online are unlikely to be safe, effective or able to deliver promising results. These weight loss pills may not sounds so dangerous but can still cause harm. A lot of diet pills are loaded with diuretic and caffeine that often leads to electrolyte imbalances and cell dehydration.

Cleanses and detox regimen

Cleansing for an upcoming colonoscopy is required to fully visualise your intestines, but cleansing to get rid of the body’s toxins is quite unnecessary. Cleansing may help you shed some pounds from stool and water weight, but it can also be harmful and often carries risks for electrolyte imbalance, dehydration and so much more. Losing fluids without medical consent is pretty risky especially when combined with fasting. The human body is fine tuned to get rid of toxins so these cleansing products are unnecessary and will only lead to complications. Instead of detoxifying, be mindful of your diet. If you want to cleanse and detoxify, eat high fibre foods and drink lots of water.

All types of purging activities

Purging includes inducing vomiting, abusing laxatives, and spitting chewed food out. These unsafe dieting behaviours are popular among teenagers and often lead to chronic eating disorders. The stomach contains strong acid meant for food digestion and absorption. Acidic vomit can cause erosion in the mouth, tooth enamel and esophagus which also increases the risk for certain cancers. Purging is not the way to trim a waistline. Drinking and eating responsibly is a safer weight loss strategy.

Legal/Illegal drugs

Using drugs other than the prescribed weight loss drugs is definitely a grim mistake that is faced with all kinds of consequences. This practice can lead to stroke, anxiety, migraine, lung & kidney problems, physical/psychological addictions, and relationship strains.

Tobacco use

Smoking has always been discouraged because of its health risks but still, there are people who engage in tobacco use as their weight loss strategy. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, yet its risk outweighs the benefits. Smoking also increases your risk for lung cancer, causes cardiovascular diseases and harms most organs in the body.
