Tears in the Rain

Posted: June 1, 2009 in Short Stories

“I wish we could be kids forever and stay here at our place until we would eventually grow up! Too bad your family is leaving soon Cassandrah”, Cisco said. It had been a long, sunny and exhausting afternoon. Beneath a blossoming tree, two young hearts lay as they blissfully glazed at the hovering vastness of the purple-blue sky.

“We could still see each other when we’re old, right Cisco?”, I answered my childhood buddy, Francisco Mercado, as the cool breeze swept over  my face and seemed to blow all my fears goodbye.

“I wish I could be the sky so that I can watch over you across the miles, Sandrah,” he added.

As I caught a glimpse of the heavens, raindrops suddenly caressed my cherubic cheeks.

“And when it rains, it means that  I’m crying because I am missing you so bad, and when you’re terribly upset and miserable, just look into the heavens and there you’ll see me smiling at you”, I promised.

Days and nights were slowly passing by and the day came that my family and I had to move somewhere else. I really didn’t know where exactly but I overheard my mom say that it was in New Jersey. I hated leaving my best friend but it’s already given in our culture that family always comes first.

My watch already read 8:45 and our flight was going to be at 9:00am. I had been anxiously waiting for him at the airport since 8:00am. I wonder where Cisco was. Isn’t he going to bid me farewell? rude!

“Well, I guess he won’t be showing up!,” I said to myself s my eyes got a little misty and my vision cloudy. A part of me hated him for being such a chicken ass and a part of me longed to see him before I leave. After all, he’s my best friend, right? I do deserve his farewell.

“Sandrah, the plane will be leaving any minute from now. I want you to stay close to me darling. Make it fast, little Ms. Cassandrah del Rosario, Mom summoned as  she busied herself with the rest of our belongings.

Meanwhile, a frail little 13-year-old boy was having a tough time going against the crowd at the airport vicinity just to catch up with his best friend.

“I guess he really won’t be coming, yes, mom, I’m coming”, I told her.

Anyway, I was the only passenger left. Then a steward came over towards me and asked me to follow my mother before it was too late. As we were approaching a glass door, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. But it was too late to turn back. Mom was forcefully gripping my hand that it was hard to let go. I was totally helpless. All that was left for me to do was to whisper, “Au revoir, Cisco”. I hoped that the wind carried my last few words to him.

“Arriverdeci, Cassandrah”, Cisco whispered as tears unnoticeably streamed forth from his eyes.

And so, this story goes, both of us had to live our own separate lives. I had to adjust and adapt to a bunch of things. I’ve gathered a couple of acquaintances and peers and learned to handle people from different races. Living in a highly technological and urban world really was a challenge from me. I’ve been through a lot of jobs and relationships, countless traveling and partying so I finally decided to settle down.

At twenty-five, after all the no good relationships I had and all the meager and bizarre love-making with a handful of men, I did march down the aisle and promised to be forever with Mr. Pete Mayfair (I wonder if he is a  descendant of the Mayfair witches). Well, anyway, he was the second man who made my heart skip a beat and rendered me completely lifeless and vulnerable under his arms and the curse of his lips.

My life actually turned out well and things were actually turning out as they were supposed to be but not until one night when Pete and I had to attend a company’s banquet. I decided to put on a simple designer’s cut black dress that perfectly fit the curves of my body and settled on a pair of diamond earrings. Simple, yet elegant-it surely defined me!

The night was totally young and I was indeed enjoying and helping myself to their world-class wines and satisfy my senses with their sumptuous buffet. I excused myself from Pete because I wanted to ask something from a connoisseur nearby. I was a fan of the culinary arts when I was a teenager but it never really occurred to me to pursue it as a career. While I was feasting my eyes on the different array of dishes, a voice knocked on me.

“ Uhm, miss, do you happen to know where I might find Mr. Pete Mayfair?”, the voice asked.

“Just look straight to your left and there you’ll see him”, I answered without even turning to see who it was who asked.

I was actually so busy poring over the food. But his voice intrigued and mystified me and I turned for once to see who it was but to my dismay, he already started moving towards the crowd. I tried to focus myself again on the dishes but I couldn’t help from turning around once again.

“Oh my God”, I whispered to myself as I saw him advancing towards me, bringing along with him a brightly lit face and a smile that made my heart beat so fast and a stature that melted my knees!

“Cisco, is that you?” I asked the man.

He hugged me tight without even answering me but I knew it then. I guess when you love a person, you just can tell.

“Sandrah, it really is you. I missed you so much”, he said with such a pleasing tone.

“You have grown so much!”

Before I could even utter a word, Pete showed up right beside him.

“Cisco, this is my husband, Pete. Pete, this is Cisco, a friend from our place”’ I said nervously.

“Oh! Mr. Pete Mayfair! I’ve been looking all over for you. I am the representative of the Mayfair Group of Companies in the Philippines. It’s really a pleasure to meet you Sir”, Cisco said as he offered a handshake.

“It’s a pleasure too, Cisco. I guess my wife and I will be leaving now. I’ll see you at the board meeting tomorrow”, Pete answered.

“Au revoir, Cisco”, I gently said to him.

A flicker of passion was still burning inside of me.

“Arriverdecci”, he replied with a faint voice.

I couldn’t concentrate the following morning at the office, knowing that Francisco would be staying here for at least a month. Could it be that a part of me still longs for him? Oh, stupid me! Why am I entertaining such thoughts! Is this a stage set for adultery? No way will I ever commit that mortal sin! No, not ever in the eyes of God!

As I was pacing back and forth, somebody knocked on the door.

“Come in”, I commanded.

“Oh, it’s you Cisco. Please have a seat. Can I offer you something? Coffee, tea, soda?

“No, thanks. I’m fine. I just wanted to tell you something you ought to know from the start”, he paused for awhile.rain

“I know it’s way too late to tell you this, but I’ve been keeping this for nearly a decade and I know that I’ll never be at peace with myself if I would keep this. I was left wanting to tell the woman I love how much she haunted me in my dreams. We were 13 years old then, innocent as we were, I never expected that this feeling would grow more and more each day. I promised myself that I’d see her again one day. I waited patiently for the years to pass me by and finally here she is right now, in front of me.”

Every word he said stabbed my heart so bad. Tears gushed forth my eyes unconsciously and the memories kept coming right in front of my very eyes. I went over the glass window overlooking the metropolis. All this time, I never really stopped loving him. I just learned to live without him. He came near me and put his arms around me. He rendered me so defenseless that I didn’t have the strength to resist. He wiped my tears dry and kissed me tenderly and longingly, and then he went away rushing so fast that I didn’t have the chance to express how I felt. We both knew this was wrong.

All of a sudden, my feet were dragging me in his direction. I rushed downstairs and went outside the office, looked around and finally spotted him. What am I doing?

“You’re doing the right thing, sweetheart”, a voice inside me said.

Various emotions were brewing up inside me.

“Cisco, wait!” I shouted at the top of my lungs as he was crossing the street.

He turned around to face me but suddenly the world turned bloody red. A car was rushing by and hit him hard. I was totally freaking out and a couple of minutes after, I felt like the world was turning around in circles. Darkness then enveloped my eyes and it was way too late that I realized that I had fainted and unfortunately hit my head hard on a pole nearby.

I woke up in a brightly lit immaculate white room. I tried to gather all my senses. Oh dear, am I in the hospital? Cisco! His name kept ringing in my mind. The events were slowly rushing back into my memory. I got up from my bed and went to the nurses’ station. After finding out that he was in a critical condition, I urgently rushed into his room, finding it bare and the nurse stripping his bed.

“Uhmm…Excuse me nurse, do you happen to know where the patients is in this room?” I asked her.

“His body has already been transported to the morgue, ma’am”, the nurse replied.

As she was saying those words, my feet were slowly melting and I was struck with immense shock. The nurse was explaining to me everything that happened in a tender manner but I was too aghast to understand what she said. She told me he had committed voluntary euthanasia due to a severe spinal injury.  His condition was deteriorating fast. I was crying hard and then I remembered the nurse handing me a piece of paper. On it were the words that I could hardly take:

I can’t go on loving you like this forever. I loved you, from the day we met and exchange and said hellos…

“No!” I screamed and cried my heart out. I hastened to the hospital’s rooftop and there I burst into tears. I hadn’t even told him how much I loved him. Life is worthless without him and I’d rather die than continue to live in hypocrisy.

As I closed my eyes, ready to fall from the building, large drops of rain touched my face. Then the memories came rushing back in my thoughts. The promises we made on that very afternoon. Our childhood memories flooded my entire soul. Then I looked into the heavens and there he was…..

Behind the Mask

Posted: May 28, 2009 in Short Stories

I never quite imagined myself tagging along with someone so geeky and nerdy. It was beyond my wildest dreams ending up with a conservative, simple, bookish man with no sense of fashion and “porma” at all. I mean, I, Samantha Enverga, daughter of two eminent doctors in town, a self-confessed party girl ending up with an egghead! An outgoing, cheerful, articulate, flamboyant, urban lady of the 21st century falling in love with the extreme opposite of my ideal man – no way! But now, it seems as if I’m eating all the words I spat out. This was the funniest, weirdest and definitely the most amazing thing that happened in my life.

There was this guy in class. He wore glasses as big as Einstein’s back in those olden days. He never got bored with his daily school-home-routine and vice versa. He always clothed himself in those old-fashioned polo shirts, some inherited from his dad, and the others were his own personal choices that really suck and are definitely “out of trend”these days. He always displayed a façade of a geeky intellectual poring over books and reading till his eye sockets eventually pop out. He wore braces over his not so pearly white teeth. He seldom put a smile on his face making him look as if he was carrying the dilemma of the world on his back. His best friend was his thick books and most often, he even talked to them which really made the whole class think he is a “21st century genius gone mad”. Oh, have I mentioned his name? Well, this guy is definitely none other than Nathaniel de Guzman.
One humid day, the whole class was eagerly waiting for the professor to arrive. My friends, Mewee, Fhilly, Shyne and Kimy and I were noisily teasing our buddies. “

“Hey Kimy, here’s a list of the top ten hunks and cuties in our batch. Catch this gorgeous!” Fhilly said as she threw a crumpled paper at her. “

“Way to go, gurl!” Kimy replied as she caught the paper with enthusiasm. “

“You have left the no. 10 slot blank! Would you like to fill it in, Sam?” Kimy asked as she handed the bit of paper to me. My friends called me Samy or Sam because according to them it’s a sexy and daring name. I read the list and a joke eventually entered my mind. It popped out of my imagination in the twinkling of an eye. “

“Ladies, I guess we could add on Nathaniel! I mean, look at him. He’s got the height, the body and the build. It’s quite undeniable.” I said as I thrust the paper to Nathaniel and hit his glasses and we eventually laughed till we dropped. The whole class started to giggle and chuckle with us as Nathaniel’s face turned red with blazing fury and rage.

“Look out! He’s going to explode!” Shyne shouted as he got up, looking furiously at us and shouted, “”Stop it, will you? Don’t you get tired picking on me every day? Is there something wrong with me? Will you mind your own damn business and go shit with somebody else?.

“Ohhh, finally mister, you spoke against us. Did you just tell us to go mess up with someone else? Don’t you know who you’re up against? I answered him. He abruptly turned away and madly left the room.
The cloak of the night’s enchantment had wrapped the world again with placid darkness. It was a weekend partying again. My friends and I invaded the dance floor at the hippest party bar in town. As my buddies danced their hearts away, I went to the counter and had a drink. As I drowned in the sensation of quenching my thirst, I saw Ethan, my all-time crush. He was wearing a sexy and ravishing black polo that really fitted his masculine build and those oh so lovely pants. He had his hair slicked up with the finest gel at the store and for the matte finish, a wise and utterly seducing masculine eau de toilette that would surely eat your heart out! “

“Hi Sam! Enjoying the night?” he asked me as his eyes bored into my whole flesh and finally dropped into mine. “

“Well, it’s fabulous! J’aime vetements Monsieur,” I answered back as I was beginning to melt in my seat at the stare of his incredibly bewitching eyes. I tried to lure him with my little bit of French but much to my surprise, he answered me, “Aimez vous le coca?”

“No, merci beaucoup”, I replied.

“Hey gurl, your French is pretty great. Guess I still have to study the language even more”, he told me as he held my hand and persuaded me to dance with him.

Now tell me, who would say no to this cute endangered species in our age? As we graciously grooved to the rhythm and beat of the music, I felt so mesmerized. He was the man of my endless fantasies. We had been party mates for a just a month or so but it seemed like I’d  known him for ages already. The whole picture was far beyond my outrageous hallucinations.
The party had already ended. This was the moment I dreaded. My chums left the place and he offered me a ride home. On our way to our chalet, I noticed a small paper box resting on my butt.

“Ethan, I guess this is yours. You’ve left this paper box here on my seat”,” I said. He said nothing for a moment. Finally, he broke the silence between us. We arrived home and he stopped the engine. The only noise we could hear was the heavy exchange of our breaths. He looked at me smoothly and gave me a queer and definitely pulse raging smile and said, “C’est un cadeaux moi. Open it. I hope you’ll like it. I had a hard time going around the stores just to find the perfect one for you.”

Did he just say it was for me? Oh dear! I opened the box carefully so as not to show my trembling hands and the sight of silver chain necklace and a cross pendant hanging form it appeared in front of my eyes. It’s totally wonderful, I said softly as I felt my body slowly melting on my seat. It was like time stopped during that early dawn. It was Ethan and me against the calmly sleeping, resting and snoring world. He hoisted his face hear to mine. He took hold of my face and brought it down to his mouth, glad that the murk concealed the satisfaction he wore. I gave back the kiss he wanted. The sensation of his tongue and lips playing over mine felt like a tingling sensation over me. I could feel the erotic bliss of his body pressed over my bosom. Then he whispered a line that made me descend from paradise to hell. I let go of him and my body was getting warm with hot, raging blood jolting over my veins. I harshly got my butt out of the seat and slammed the door of his car. These resentful times, I felt like crying but I didn’t swallow my pride. Seeing tears stream forth from my eyes would make him think he defeated me.

”I can’t believe you dared do this to me,” those were the last words I furiously spat out my mouth that night. I turned away and walked towards our house. As I walked, I felt like my whole body weight doubled. Why had I involved myself in such misery? “

“I love you Sam, that’s all that matters now!”, he shouted as I heard the engines roar away from the road. Finally, he was gone and I couldn’t deny myself anymore. In my room, I cried myself nearly to death. I regretted what I just did. I was stupidly remorseful why I drove him away. Who could blame me anyway? I was totally shocked. I was confused. My emotions were badly, smitten and I just got carried away. I cried the night away and the following morning I obviously had bloodshot eyes.
It was Monday again and it was quite an ordinary day for me.

“Samy, so how was your date with Ethan?” Fhilly inquired. “

“Yeah, how was your night with that hunk?”” Shyne butted in. “

“Where did you hang out after the party?” Kimy added. “

“It was fine, Mademoiselles. He just dropped me off at our house. Nothing fishy so far happened”, I lied. “

“You mean, are you sure nothing else happened?” Mewee asked me and gave me a naughty look. “Yes girls, nothing much!”, I lied again. “

“Ohh, how slow. Ethan’s too slouchy for our Lady here,” Fhil said as the rest nodded and agreed with her. “

“Girls, wait a minute. Here comes our good, old, neurotic Nathaniel, Mr. Know-it-all, inventor of the anti-boisterous device specially designed for girls to stop picking on him, nerdy, small Dexter’s reincarnation from cartoon to reality, but sad to say, turned out to be the craziest man of his time because his brain tissues eventually popped out already due to mere exposure of immense data. How’s that ladies?” Shyne said as she playfully stroked Nathaniel’s hair seductively and snatched his glasses.

“Hey, give me back my glasses you filthy brats!” he replied furiously.

“Just what the heck did you just call me?” Kimy asked as she threw trash paper at him.

“The next time you call us by that name again, we’ll make sure you won’t come out alive in this!”,” Fhilly warned him as she threw his books away from him and they lay scattered on the floor.
My emotions were cruelly playing over me- anger, hatred, pity, love, and affection. I didn’t know what to do  to leave the man I loved or to live by the expectations and rules of my friends. I wanted to abandon the scene and vanish into thin air. But then, I did something I never imagined I could do.

“Stop it girls! Stop mocking at him! This is too much. It’s not fair.” I shouted at them as I shielded Nathaniel against my mean friends.

“Am I hearing you right? Have you gone mad girl?”, Fhilly was shocked at my declaration.

“Has the world turned upside down? You’re lying Sammy. Tell us you’re lying.” Kimy added. “I’m afraid I’m not Kimy. You see, I know you won’t understand. I love Ethan. And the man who happens to be at my back right now, the man you’ve scoffed and scorned, is him.”, the words slipped away from my mouth so naturally as I looked back at his pitiful and immaculate eyes. My friends were dumbfounded at what they heard. I could tell by the look in their faces how shocked they were. They left their mouths hanging open at the sight of Nathaniel and I locked in each other’s arms.
